Business process modeling is a lofty topic, and one I certainly won’t claim to cover completely in a single blog post. When I first dipped my toes into the auction house in WoW it felt overwhelming, but I quickly developed a business process oriented view of my activities that really helped me gain momentum and meet my goals.
A business process is simply a list of activities designed to produce a specified output or result. In a real world business, some typical business processes might include things like:
- Purchasing raw materials
- Manufacturing products to sell
- Training new employees
- Advertising products to customers
Businesses often separate their processes into categories like management, operational, or support.
The way you break down your business activities in WoW might be different from how I do it, but here is a basic starting list that worked for me:
- Deciding what to sell
- Buying materials from the auction house
- Manufacturing items to sell
- Posting auctions
That’s it — no need to go crazy especially when you start. The real benefit of thinking this way is you tackle each part one at a time, using the best tools (addons) and toon for each part. In future posts we’ll look into each of these processes and other is more detail. Don’t get overwhelmed, thinking in business processes breaks it all down into manageable chunks.
